MISHOU SECTIONS

Submissions:

This section includes artwork submitted (sent to us) by readers, like you! In every issue of Mishou, artist and educator Kayla Ephros creates a new prompt that she hopes will inspire you to make art! A prompt is an idea, question, or anything that can be used as a starting point for art-making. Kayla’s prompts always include her drawings and writing, to help guide you in your art-making process.

All submissions will be shown on our website here, and some of them will be printed in the magazine! Even if you don’t submit, you can still try them out!

Interact:

We share games, puzzles, questions, and more activities made by grown-up artists that readers can interact with.

Interact is a very important word in art. Interacting means that you, as the viewer of art, get to participate. Sometimes it means you can touch an artwork, go inside of it, smell it, or taste it. And so you can (and should) draw and write directly on the page!

Dizzy Dollhouse:

In this section, we feature an artist who. makes 3-Dimensional (3D) artwork, or sculpture. A 3D work of art is anything that isn't flat. For example, a doll. Most sculptures are considered 3D.

Sometimes what we show in the Dollhouse can be functional, meaning that people can use the artwork, not just look at it. For example, to play with. Functional art is anything that can be looked at and also used!

Program Highlight:

In Mishou, we highlight art programs that are focused on working with young artists. We are specifically interested in introducing programs that offer free ways to serve a community.

An art program is an organization that provides classes, workshops, opportunities, spaces, or other services that can help make art accessible to specific communities.

Then & Now:

We show a grown-up artist who has been making art their whole life. You get to see the artwork they made when they were a kid, and the artwork that they make now, as an adult.

Picture Book Collaboration:

We introduce an adult artist and a writer under age 15 to create an original illustrated story.

Collaboration is when you work together with other people to make something. A Picture Book is a book that has both words and images. Oftentimes, Picture Books are a collaboration between an author and an artist. Pictures can help a reader understand what’s happening in a story. Have you ever collaborated before? What kind of art project would you want to do with someone else?

Family:

This section introduces families that make art together. The family shares art projects they do together, with information on how to try it yourself, with your family or friends.

Family can mean a lot of things, and can look a lot of different ways.

Dear Readers,

DIZZYBOY2.gif

This magazine is a paper-y space where you can take a break from your screens, and still connect with people all around the world, through art! Each person, no matter their age, has a unique way of expressing themselves. This happens naturally, because we all have our own stories to tell! Through art we can see pieces of ourselves in other people, which I find comforting and validating. It is our goal to show you lots of different ways that people can be creative.

Whether you are looking at this magazine by yourself, with a friend, teacher, or family member, we hope to take you on an exciting, colorful journey through all different kinds of art and artmakers. Don't forget, Mishou Magazine was made for YOU!

Mishou Magazine is published by Dizzy Books. Dizzy is an art book and art magazine publisher focused on bridging the gap between artists of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of exposure. We feel it is important to eliminate the emphasis on these differences, while still celebrating the artists’ identities. Dizzy Magazine includes in depth conversations with artists, as well as sections, like our “Pet Page” and “12 and Under”, in which we feature a young artist, to engage readers of all ages. Mishou Magazine is an extension of this ethos, with even more emphasis on artists and readers ages 15 and younger, collaborations between generations, and interactive sections.

We approach our publications with the hope that they are something you’ll want to put on your bookshelf, and come back to. Dizzy works to represent artists in the way they want to be seen, while creating accessible content to be enjoyed by everyone!
